Find Out What Your Skin Type Really Is

January 24th, 2010

Picture this. You’re standing in front of rack after rack of skin care products that all claim to do the same thing - make your skin glow, wrinkles disappear, and give you back the skin you had years ago. This is not a nightmare - it happens every day to scores of women just like you in stores around the world. Women staring blankly at the array of facial cleansing, firming, and moisturizing products without a clue which one to choose.

Now that you’ve stepped back from the hundreds of pretty packages of skin care products all claiming the same miracle results, you begin the real work; choosing a facial care product or two. How do you narrow down the choices? If you’re like most women you’ll try to determine your skin type. Manufacturers of most skin care products you’ll find at the department stores will tell you that you fit into one of only three categories of skin type: dry, oily, or combination skin. Is it difficult to label your skin type using such a limited guideline? The answer is yes.

When you’re shopping for skin care products like moisturizers, cleansers, and toners, you are probably guessing what your skin needs. Your skin feels tight after washing it so you must need a thick and creamy moisturizer. You are constantly mopping oil from your forehead and nose so you must need to keep drying up the oil with astringents and other toners. If you are using these methods and you’re still standing in a store puzzling over what to choose, you don’t really know what your skin needs. Only a professionally trained skin care expert, or esthetician, can really go beyond the standard three skin types and find out what you need to improve your skin.

Our skin cannot be simply labeled one of three categories. Our skin is a living organism that requires us to look more closely at what it needs to stay healthy. When Face Mapping(R) with Dermalogica was introduced on the CBS program The Doctors, we learned that we have many more areas and skin care needs of the face and neck than we are led to believe.

Once our skin is “mapped” by a skin care professional, according to the people at Dermalogica we will then be able to know our skin and treat it accordingly. Guessing what our skin needs won’t give us the results claimed by any skin care product.

For instance, a common misconception for treating shiny skin is to strip the oils from our forehead, nose, and chin (the so-called T-zone) using a strong astringent. This method can irritate the skin which causes more oil to form in order to soothe the irritated skin. You can see the vicious cycle.

If we have “aging skin” it does not necessarily mean we fit that particular category in all areas of our skin. Nor does it mean that every moisturizing, lifting, firming, and anti-wrinkle product is right for us. Slapping on gobs of thick creams on our drooping neck or wrinkly eyes may not be what our skin needs. Our aging skin may need some cell rejuvenation and exfoliation. All aging skin is especially sensitive to how it’s treated as its skin cells don’t refresh as quickly.

Creams and lotions labeled “for aging skin” may feel good but may not be what is needed for your particular skin type, especially if you are aging! A professional skin care expert, or esthetician, will tell clients over a certain age that their skin has additional nutritional needs as they age. Freshening the cells, speeding up cell turn over, retaining moisture, as well as a healthy diet, plenty of water, and exercise will do more for the skin than all the thick night creams in the world.

Did you know your skin is your body’s largest organ? We sometimes forget to treat our skin with the respect that we treat our bones and muscles, stomach and lungs. Treat your skin properly by first learning your skin type and what that skin type needs. Pay a visit to your favorite skin care expert and find out what your skin really needs to stay healthy and beautiful. Your skin will reward you in return!

January 23rd, 2010

Many individuals have used various acne products without actually having any success in clearing their skin. And let’s face it, acne is a enormous nuisance! Don’t worry though - getting clear skin is entirely possible.

Ok - let’s speedily go over the reasons that almost all acne products don’t end up working.

The trouble with most of of the treatments out there is that they are designed to only cover up or treat pimples AFTER they have already appeared. They merely try to get rid of pimples one by one rather than treating acne at the heart of the issue.

This is the problem! There isn’t a point in attacking one zit without doing anything to stop new ones! This is a huge annoyance of mine and I notice many people wasting cash because of it.

You need to utilize a product that targets all of the factors that can cause acne if you really want to get clear skin. There are four major causes: excess oil on the skin, acne causing bacteria, skin irritation and plugged up skin pores. Eliminating pimples involves treating every single one of these causes.

You won’t find anything really useful in the drugstores, but there are solutions out there that can actually get rid of your pimples. You will find that these act as a system and normally use a few steps to ensure you are targeting the causes appropriately.

Once you use a product that actually treats the causes of pimples, you will see results within a week or so. It’s a great feeling looking at yourself in the mirror and notice the results.

Don’t get down if you have tried products in the past that didn’t work! You can and will get rid of your acne once you locate the best treatment for you.

Open Question: Which skin care product is best for oily and works for anti aging too?

December 18th, 2009

I am not yet 30 and I have oily skin and I’m still breaking out a lot. I also have wrinkles or fine lines on my forehead, around my eyes(a little) and around my mouth(laughing lines) I’m looking for a product(s) that will help clear my skin and help the fine lines. Any suggestions?

Open Question: What is a good skin care line that will cover anti-aging and dry, dull skin?

December 18th, 2009

am turning 30 so I am looking for a product that will work as an anti-aging as well as help me with my dry, dull skin. I recently tried the Clinique moisturizer (the yellow lotion) and I broke out horribly. It was too greasy. I also tried Arbonne RE-9 but was not impressed with the results. I thought maybe I did not try it long enough and have read Arbonne reviews on here but it is obvious that most of the people who respond to them sell Arbonne products. Kinerase I heard it good but too expensive. I started looking into Oil of Olay but there are so many products to choose from it is overwhelming. If anyone has any suggestions of products that have worked for you it would be appreciated.

Open Question: What age is too young to start using a mild over the counter anti-wrinkle cream?

December 18th, 2009

I am in my 30’s. I have some blemishes on my face, some mild wrinkles on my forehead, and some laugh lines. Nothing too serious. Am I too young to start using the over-the-counter anti- wrinkle creams such as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle cream w/spf?

Someone told me that these products can actually CREATE wrinkles if you use them when you don’t need to.

Can you give me some advice?

Resolved Question: Anti-aging cream products.?

December 18th, 2009

I am 30, have kind of a baby face, and as much as I love my age, I’m not ready to show it yet.
I can only spend $20, maybe $30 on creams. I know eventually I won’t be able to hide my age and forever prevent wrinkles. I do use sunblock.
I was wondering, which creams you used, and which truly worked, and which were gimmicks. I was thinking maybe trying Roc, Oil of Oly, Ponds, stuff you find in any drug store, the one from Susan Lucci you now see in Walgreens… Also, does microbraison really work? Peals?

Thanks a bunch!
smokes, I should’ve thought to ask about vitamin E and vitamin C creams. Shame on myself!

But I will definitly think things over, thanks for the contributions. I sure need to drink more h2o!

Resolved Question: does red water laboratories anti-wrinkle face cream work?

December 18th, 2009

i got it at walgreens as a free sample.
did it work on you, if you’ve ever used it?
THANX.

Resolved Question: Can you recommend a good eye product?

December 18th, 2009

I am 31 years old and am noticing I have more fine lines around my eyes then I would like. Is there a anti-wrinkle eyecream that works well, but isn’t crazy expensive and that I can get at Walgreens or CVS?

Resolved Question: What is the best Anti Aging Cream????

December 18th, 2009

I’m only 23 with no signs of wrinkles yet, but I’d like to start using something now for prevention. What can I start using? Somthing not very harsh, and that I can find at a CVS, Walgreens etc. Theres so much stuff in those aisles!
