Find Out What Your Skin Type Really Is

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Picture this. You’re standing in front of rack after rack of skin care products that all claim to do the same thing - make your skin glow, wrinkles disappear, and give you back the skin you had years ago. This is not a nightmare - it happens every day to scores of women just like you in stores around the world. Women staring blankly at the array of facial cleansing, firming, and moisturizing products without a clue which one to choose.

Now that you’ve stepped back from the hundreds of pretty packages of skin care products all claiming the same miracle results, you begin the real work; choosing a facial care product or two. How do you narrow down the choices? If you’re like most women you’ll try to determine your skin type. Manufacturers of most skin care products you’ll find at the department stores will tell you that you fit into one of only three categories of skin type: dry, oily, or combination skin. Is it difficult to label your skin type using such a limited guideline? The answer is yes.

When you’re shopping for skin care products like moisturizers, cleansers, and toners, you are probably guessing what your skin needs. Your skin feels tight after washing it so you must need a thick and creamy moisturizer. You are constantly mopping oil from your forehead and nose so you must need to keep drying up the oil with astringents and other toners. If you are using these methods and you’re still standing in a store puzzling over what to choose, you don’t really know what your skin needs. Only a professionally trained skin care expert, or esthetician, can really go beyond the standard three skin types and find out what you need to improve your skin.

Our skin cannot be simply labeled one of three categories. Our skin is a living organism that requires us to look more closely at what it needs to stay healthy. When Face Mapping(R) with Dermalogica was introduced on the CBS program The Doctors, we learned that we have many more areas and skin care needs of the face and neck than we are led to believe.

Once our skin is “mapped” by a skin care professional, according to the people at Dermalogica we will then be able to know our skin and treat it accordingly. Guessing what our skin needs won’t give us the results claimed by any skin care product.

For instance, a common misconception for treating shiny skin is to strip the oils from our forehead, nose, and chin (the so-called T-zone) using a strong astringent. This method can irritate the skin which causes more oil to form in order to soothe the irritated skin. You can see the vicious cycle.

If we have “aging skin” it does not necessarily mean we fit that particular category in all areas of our skin. Nor does it mean that every moisturizing, lifting, firming, and anti-wrinkle product is right for us. Slapping on gobs of thick creams on our drooping neck or wrinkly eyes may not be what our skin needs. Our aging skin may need some cell rejuvenation and exfoliation. All aging skin is especially sensitive to how it’s treated as its skin cells don’t refresh as quickly.

Creams and lotions labeled “for aging skin” may feel good but may not be what is needed for your particular skin type, especially if you are aging! A professional skin care expert, or esthetician, will tell clients over a certain age that their skin has additional nutritional needs as they age. Freshening the cells, speeding up cell turn over, retaining moisture, as well as a healthy diet, plenty of water, and exercise will do more for the skin than all the thick night creams in the world.

Did you know your skin is your body’s largest organ? We sometimes forget to treat our skin with the respect that we treat our bones and muscles, stomach and lungs. Treat your skin properly by first learning your skin type and what that skin type needs. Pay a visit to your favorite skin care expert and find out what your skin really needs to stay healthy and beautiful. Your skin will reward you in return!

Getting the Right Skin Care Products — Can it Be Done Online?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Nothing wrong with a good drug store — they sell loads of useful things that we need constantly in our day-to-day lives, and the pharmacy is great — but what about our skin products?

We’ve put together 5 reasons you need to get skin products online.

#5: It’s all about the prices.

Thanks to the internet’s no-storefront policy, you aren’t paying big prices for a brick-and-mortar store, which might have some cheaper, off-brand skin care products for sale, but any good skin care products on the higher end will definitely be cheaper online. Because they can concentrate on their essential strengths, you win.

#4: Drug Stores are Stuck Carrying Major Brands.

Since most drug stores have to get their stuff from a centralized distribution which is controlled through the franchise head, it’s not easy to find a revolutionary product on the shelves for several months. For that, you need to look online, where smaller vendors are able to update their stocks very quickly, with brand new products not available elsewhere.

#3: A Drug Store Tries to Be Everything.

Drug stores exist to serve dozens of customers with hundreds of needs. Are you sure you’ll be able to get the right product at the right price, specifically to care for your skin? There aren’t many skin-care stores you can find in your average mall, but there are plenty of great specialty shops online dedicated only to that.

#2: Buying Skin Care Products Can Sometimes Be Embarrassing.

If you’ve got some serious skin care issues, no matter how sympathetic the person at the counter might be, it can still be painful to go into a drug store and buy (or worse, ask about) a product to treat your skin. If you order online, you can take advantage of the anonymity of the internet and save your ego from getting bruised.

#1: You’ve Probably Researched Online — Why Not Order There Too?

Hopefully you’ve talked to your dermatologist about whatever you need for your skin, and the entire issue of skin care is one we should never take lightly. But there’s a wealth of information online, and once you’ve spent some time researching, it’s a hassle to write it down on paper, go to the drug store, and be faced with options you don’t recognize. By sticking online, you solve that problem immediately.

Seven Vital Skin Care Techniques For A Healthy Glow

Seven Essential Skin Care Tips

No matter what age or nationality, everyone wants to look good. This is not always easy as modern living takes its toll due to stress, poor diets, and other factors. When our health is not up to the mark it is easily noticed through the condition of our skin. To try to alleviate the problems to a certain degree you can follow some of the important skin care techniques.

1. Cleansers: It is of utmost importance to maintain a good cleansing routine. The pores in our skin, and its surface in general, can easily get clogged up with dirt from our lives. You should use skin cleansers twice daily to remove any accumulations. The actual product that you use will depend upon the skin type that you have. If you know that you have sensitive skin then you need to choose a cleanser that contains natural ingredients.

2. Relax: It is important to be relaxed as often as we can. If you find yourself often getting stressed then this will definitely have an affect on the quality and appearance of your skin. Try to not let worries take over your mind; it can be very useful to practice meditation techniques or even yoga.

3. Exercise: We all are aware that exercise is very important, but even with this knowledge it is only a small percentage of people that have a daily exercise regime. When you exercise you will remove toxins through your sweat glands, and also reduce the amount of fatty tissue in your body. It will also improve your blood flow and lung capacity, both of which will improve the overall condition of your skin.

4. Diet: We all know that we need to have a good diet. This should be high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in red meat and dairy products. Today with most people having busy lives it is often easier to consume large amounts of junk food; this will have a terrible effect on the skin. If you feel like it is difficult for you to consume the right dosage of vitamins and nutrients each day then why not start your morning with a healthy fruit smoothie or shake.

5. Rest: If you do not get enough sleep then your skin will definitely suffer. Try to maintain a regular sleep pattern with between six to eight hours full rest each night. Less than this and your skin will not rejuvenate itself so quickly. Simply by smiling or frowning each day we are working our facial muscles; these need time to refresh themselves every night.

6. Water: If we want to maintain good health than we have to consume the correct amount of water on a daily basis. Without doing so our bodies will become dehydrated and our skin will become flaky and dry. More wrinkles can also be caused through a lack of water.

7. Moisturizers: For our skin to remain flexible, soft, and supple it is wise to use moisturizing creams. These are best applied after we have taken a shower or bath. Be careful not to overuse them as you do not want you skin’s pores to be constantly blocked.

Not a lot people know the proper routine for skin care and acne treatment. There are many ways to look after you face, and there is no one way that will work for everyone.

How To Clear Acne-Prone Skin

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Not only teenagers have acne-prone skin because adults also can get acne. However, this should not be a problem for you if you take the necessary steps to care for your skin and find ways to get rid of the acne. Hormones may cause acne but sometimes, it could also be how you take care of your skin that has something to do with your skin condition.

So, if you expect to have crystal clear and smooth skin free from acne, you will really need to put some effort into taking good care of your skin. Some people may not need to put much effort into having flawless smooth skin while there are some who needs to take that extra steps to take care of the skin for the desired flawless skin. If your skin is prone to break-outs, then you should start taking steps to make it all go away and prevent it from happening again.

To get rid of acne, you must never fall victim to acne myths which will not help you in the least. Instead, you can take concrete steps that are effective in clearing up your acne prone skin. One of the simplest method is to practice a strict skin care regime which includes cleansing, toning and moisturizing. This, you only need to do twice a day. You need to cleanse to get rid of the dirt and oil on your skin, then to tone it to reduce the pores and moisturize it to protect the skin from the harsh environment. Without moisturizers, you will be leaving your skin bare and unprotected which is not good.

To treat the acne, you will need to get some acne treatment creams or lotions that work. It need not be some expensive prescription at all. In fact, you can try out one of the more effective over-the-counter cream such as those that contains benzoyl peroxide which is proven effective in combating acne. However, it is best that you try it on a small area of your skin first before going all out and applying it on all the acne on your face. This is because each individual’s skin has different sensitivities and reacts differently to creams and lotions.

Even for skin care products such as cleansers, toners and moisturizers, it is important you get those that are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic so that it will not further irritate your skin and cause more break-outs. Your best bet is to get sample sizes and try out the products in small portions. If you find that it does not irritate your skin and seems to help, then you can continue using them. Therefore, there is no point for you to go out and get some highly hyped skin care range if in the end it does not suit your skin. You need to get products that your skin can accept.

Finally, remember to always cleanse your face, follow up with a toner and then a moisturizer, especially ones with sunblock in it. You need the toner to reduce the pores and the moisturizer is to provide a layer of protection for your skin so that it does not need to go into overdrive to produce sebum to protect your skin. And if you have acne, also remember to apply the topical acne treatment cream to it. Always, always remember NOT to pop the acne. Popping the acne will cause scars and that’s not all, it may even spread the bacteria to other areas of the skin and cause more acne. So keep your hands away, take good care of your skin and you are on your way to smooth, flawless skin!

Acne-friendly Cleansers

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Modern acne treatment kits almost always incorporate a cleansing stage. By using a cleanser, you help your skin dispose of dead skin cells and other contaminants that may be may be lingering on its surface. While cleansing is a rather simplistic process, technique is only half of what’s involved. A suitable cleansing product is a must, especially for acne-prone skin that responds negatively to irritation. It is common to see people use cleansers that contain harmful ingredients including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and alcohol. These strip the skin of whatever moisture it may have and consequently leave it dry, red, and irritated. Acne breakouts run rampant in this type of environment. If you currently suffer from acne that has been unresponsive to conventional treatment, your cleanser of choice may be to blame. In the following, we will examine some of the characteristics to look for in a suitable acne cleanser.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is an additive in many household products that is just beginning to receive attention. Cleaners and soaps often contain this chemical so that they can lather in hard water. Hard water is mineral-rich water that typically forms soap scum when combined with soap. While not officially known as a carcinogen, SLS is currently classified as a pesticide. In addition to the household products, SLS is also found in industrial products such as engine degreaser. This should give ample indication as to its harsh nature. SLS has been linked to skin irritation even at small concentrations. Acne-prone skin is not fond of irritation. A small amount of irritation can go a long way in causing breakouts. So, the first rule of shopping for an acne cleanser is to avoid ones that contain SLS. Skim product labels as you are browsing cleaners. If SLS comes up, move on to another product.

It is a mystery why most people believe cleanser is designed to remove oils from the skin, leaving it tight and uncomfortable. Despite popular belief, cleanser is actually designed to remove contaminants off your skin without drastically affecting skin moisture levels. Removing oils from your skin can prove immensely troublesome, leaving it dry and irritated. This often translates to more acne. Some studies have also suggested that the skin may overcompensate for lost oil, by producing more, causing an oily complexion. If you want to avoid such problems, it is best to avoid cleansers with astringents such as alcohol. If your current cleanser gives you that tight feeling after washing, you should switch to another, more suitable product.

Our skin is most healthy when it falls into a certain pH range. This range happens to be in 4-5, slightly acidic area. Many soaps and cleansers are highly basic, or alkaline, with a pH over 7. When we apply these products to our skin, the acidity is disrupted and our skin becomes vulnerable to a countless number of threats. For the outer layer of the skin to effectively protect us from the outside world, it needs to maintain that slightly acidic characteristic. Fortunately, there are products available which claim to be pH balanced. These often have a pH of 7, causing a minimal disruption in acidity, and thus allowing our skin to combat acne bacteria, alongside many other threats.

Locating a quality cleanser isn’t an extremely difficult feat. After you start using the right one, you should notice a marked improvement in the appearance of your skin. Although a difficult disorder to treat, acne can be managed with the right products. Gentle treatments are the key to clear skin.

Learn What Makes A Good Wrinkle Cream

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

A good wrinkle cream is one that fills in the fine lines on your face giving you a younger look. Many beauty skin care lines offer creams that are anti-wrinkle. These creams need to be used as directed. But, what makes a good wrinkle cream is the ingredient called antioxidant.

The breakdown of skin is a natural part of aging. During this process the skin tend to lose oxygen and increasing levels. This loss of oxygen can be slowed by the use of anti-oxidants.

There are two main ingredients that work as anti-oxidants: Green Tea Extract and Retinol. When compared with each other, Retinol is the more effective. Retinol is essential Vitamin A and products that contain in are called Tritonin.

Skin care products that contain Green Tea are extremely effective at fighting free radicals that increase the breakdown of molecules. It is important to note, women who plan on becoming pregnant or already are should not use products that contain Vitamin A.

Products that contain Alpha hydroxy acids act as an exfoliant. When these products are used, the top layer of cells are removed leaving a new layer of cells exposed. The issue around these products is that the sun’s rays can cause skin discoloration.

To avoid blotchy or sun damaged skin while using a product that contains alpha hydroxy, make sure to avoid sunlight. Doing so will help you to avoid a lot of problems associated with this powerful treatment.

It really all comes down to the formula chosen by the manufacture of a product. Green Tea Extracts, Vitamin A and Retinol are all widely used in the industry. However, products that contain real collagen are the most effective method for smoothing out the signs of aging.

A good wrinkle cream should include antioxidants. A combination of organic serums mixed with Vitamins A and E are very effective in smoothing wrinkles.

What makes a good wrinkle cream is a laboratory that has innovative researchers. Of course, these creams are more expensive. But, a wrinkle cream found in a drugstore that has antioxidants and Vitamins A and E are your best bet to a good wrinkle cream.

Alexander Malroy is a dedicated researcher looking to find the best wrinkle cream. During his anti-aging studies Alexander has reviewed over 1000 wrinkles creams, and 452 HGH products (including the very popular Sytropin). When Alexander is not researching anti aging products he enjoys spending time in the Idaho wilderness with his two dogs: Hugo and Xanders

Cleanser Recommendations for Acne

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

A reliable acne product should call for a cleansing process. Cleanser allows your skin to more easily get rid of dead skin cells and other surface contaminants. While the cleaning process is simple in itself, there is more to treating acne than just technique. You need to have the right products in your arsenal. Without the right cleanser, you may be subjecting your skin to irritation, which ultimately contributes to more acne breakouts. It is not uncommon to see people utilize products with very harsh ingredients. Such ingredients, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and alcohol can be immensely damaging to the skin. Those that presently suffer from acne that has not responded well to over-the-counter treatments should take a close look at their cleanser of choice. To follow, we will be exploring the characteristics that constitute a quality cleanser.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a chemical found in numerous household cleaning products that is just starting to see widespread attention. This additive is incorporated in products such as soap to induce a lather in the absence of soft water. Most homes in the United States are supplied with hard water, which combines with soap to from soap scum as opposed to a lather. Although SLS has not been officially labeled as dangerous, it is considered a pesticide. Further, many industrial cleaning products also contain SLS. It should be evident that SLS is a harsh ingredient. Lab tests have shown that SLS acts as an irritant when it comes into contact with skin. Irritation and acne do not mix well, and the end result is usually more breakouts. So, if you are looking for a cleanser, avoid those that contain SLS. A quick glance at the product label should reveal of a cleanser contains this harmful ingredient.

Many assume that cleanser is designed to remove oils from the face, in addition to other contaminants. Putting popular belief aside, cleanser is designed to eradicate contaminants without having much of a drastic effect on skin moisture levels. When you strip oils from your skin, you leave it irritated. This can easily translate into more acne breakouts. There is also indication that the skin tries to overcompensate for lost oil by producing more, resulting in an overly oily complexion. You can avoid problems associated with dry skin by choosing a cleanser without astringents like alcohol. If after washing your face it feels tight and dry, you need to switch to a better cleanser.

The uppermost layer of skin is designed to protect us against external threats. To maintain this barrier-like quality, the skin must maintain optimal conditions, including a certain acidity. Skin likes a slightly acidic environment, one that falls within the 4-5 pH range. Soaps and cleansers often disrupt this pH due to their basic nature. When a disruption in acidity occurs, our skin is left vulnerable to attack. You can avoid disrupting your skin’s acidic environment by using a pH balanced cleanser. These cleansers, with a pH of 7, enable our skin to continue providing essential protection.

Finding a quality cleanser is not as monumental a task as it initially appears. When you begin using a quality product, the results should be immediate. Your skin will begin to feel far more healthy. With the right, gentle products, acne should be quite manageable.

Wrinkle Creams Then and Now

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Times have sure changed when it comes to the battle to diminish wrinkles. I think we all can remember going into our Grandma’s bathroom and seeing her bottle of “Oil of Olay” which she claimed diminished her wrinkles and was the best moisturizer for her face. That is all women and men had back in those days to get rid of wrinkles. Yes men used it too for their wrinkles too.

There have been a number of huge breakthroughs in the cosmetic industry since the late 1980s. With these advances we have seen a massive influx of wrinkle cream products, some of which really do reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, not all products are created equal, so you will have to do a little research before you buy one.

There are a number of ways to research a beauty product that you are interested in. You can always pick up some beauty magazines that have information regarding wrinkle products, or you can search the internet for various wrinkle cream review sites.

Using the internet is the fastest and cheapest way to find out information regarding skin care products. Try using some of these search phrases for the best news and reviews related to wrinkle creams: Wrinkle Cream, Skin Care, Wrinkle Cream Review and even Best Wrinkle Cream.

As we all know most products we purchase contain some kind of parbens. Parabens are in everything we use including shampoo, toothpaste, and make up. So why is everyone in a tizzy about things containing parabens? There has never been a case documented that a product with Parabens caused cancer, or any other diseases

In today’s society appearance is everything. How you look can be the determining factor in getting a new job, a new romantic interest and can even effect how people treat you on a day to day basis. Who you are on the inside is obviously more important than how you look, but unfortunately how you look might hold you back in life. This is one of the many reasons that wrinkle cream products are so popular, and they are a great alternative to painful, costly cosmetic injections.

Many men and women either take before pictures when they start using a wrinkle cream and then an after picture each week. This helps them determine if the product is working for them, or if they should send it back for a refund.

If you have never seen the power of wrinkle creams such as Avotone and Revitol, you will be pleasantly surprised that the amazing breakthroughs is cosmetics. Many of these product that are only found on the internet have similar effects to cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX. These amazing products are defiantly not your grandmother’s Oil of Olay.
