Don’t Mix Unsafe Cosmetics And Teenage Girls
Saturday, March 21st, 2009You might be unaware that there are dangerous ingredients in many big brand name cosmetics, and a new study is showing that this might be affecting teenage girls.
Our big brand cosmetics can be loaded with ingredients that aren’t safe and we ought not put on our skin. A recent study, for example, showed there was lead in over 50% of lipsticks tested.
Surely there can’t be lead in our lipsticks? Isn’t lead really dangerous? Yes it is, but sadly the FDA doesn’t require cosmetics companies to show that their products are safe to use. It’s the same with anti aging and skin care products.
And yet for those of us using cosmetics we are putting them into our systems just as if they were drugs. When you apply a cosmetic product like a lipstick or a blush our a rouge some of that products ends up inside of us.
And it goes in because our skin is porous and what goes on mostly goes in and ends up in our bodes. That’s fine it the ingredients are harmless but lead? That’s not harmless.
And there’s a new study now which suggests that there are good reason why our teenage girls should be using safe cosmetics rather than the big brand dangerous cosmetics that so many use now. Here’s a quote from the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics.
“Laboratory tests reveal adolescent girls across America are contaminated with chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and body care products.”
Now isn’t that scary? And it’s worse than you’d imagine, and if you’re a parent of teenage girls who use cosmetics, (and which girls don’t) it’s really scary.
The Environmental Working Group found chemicals from 4 different families of chemicals (phthalates, parabens, triclosan and musks) in the urine of girls between the ages of 14 and 20 who were tested in the study.
Some of these chemicals were found in the urine of every single girl tested.
And teenage girls are growing very fast, so the last thing they need is to be adding nasty chemicals to their bodies.
Most of these chemicals are hormone altering and so our teenage girls are taking a big risk at a time when they shouldn’t by using these toxic chemicals in their cosmetics.
What will be the result of these possible risks to the reproductive health of young girls? Who knows, but I for one don’t want my daughter to find out.
There seem to be risks to our girls but no one really knows the possible consequences.
That’s a matter of concern for parents and girls, but there are alternatives. There are excellent companies making safe cosmetics and safe skin care products that work very well indeed and don’t contain dangerous ingredients. So no risks to our daughters.
Unfortunately these companies are small niche companies unable to compete with the big brand names, and they don’t even try to compete. You’ll never find them advertising on TV for example. And you’re unlikely to find their products in the department stores either.
But if you search you can find small companies making excellent and safe cosmetics and also safe natural skin care products that are extremely good, and better quality than the big brands.
So don’t take risks with your daughters health. Use top shelf safe cosmetics and highly effective skin care products and make sure you or your daughter aren’t using products with dangerous ingredients in them.
